In recent years Wisconsin's farmers have increasingly complained that they pay an unfair share of the cost of public schools and local government services, both of which have relied on property taxes for much of their financing. They have also felt that high property taxes put them at a disadvantage in competing with farmers in other states. The Wisconsin state legislature is now poised to debate how to distribute and pay for a major property tax reform bill passed last year. So it's important to know what the facts are about farmers' property tax payments and about the extent to which the existing tax structure is inequitable for them.
