Farmer Recommendations for Improving University of Wisconsin Dairy Extension

Declining real income from dairying over the last two decades presents a challenge to Wisconsin farmers and the rural communities who depend on them. Reflected in high rates of dairy farm loss and stagnant levels of milk production, the health of the state’s dairy farming sector is increasingly at issue. What role can the University play in strengthening and ensuring the viability of the farms that currently constitute the backbone of the Wisconsin dairy industry? To help answer this question, we invited groups of dairy farmers from three distinct dairy regions in Wisconsin to offer their ideas and opinions about agricultural extension at the University of Wisconsin.
