The 1990s were marked by significant losses in farm and cow numbers. The effect of these losses on total milk production was partially mitigated by large productivity gains (milk/cow/year). However, between 2000 and 2002, productivity leveled off and cow numbers continued to decline. From 1991 to 2002, the average dairy herd grew by 29% (from 55 to 71 cows) throughout the state.
