This paper presents some results of an extensive survey of Wisconsin farm operators conducted by the Agricultural Technology and Family Farm Institute in the spring of 1993. In the first section, information about the typical entry process for Wisconsin farm operators is discussed. The second section examines the significance of farm background, family farmland, and other family resources for entry into farming. The remainder of the paper is devoted to examining the characteristics of farm operators who have become principal farm operators in the last 20 years. Particular emphasis is placed on farm operators who entered between 1988 and 1992.
