The Census figures and observations from rural people indicate that the numbers of young people taking up dairy farming as a career have dropped, while the number of farmers exiting the profession remains constant, if not slightly up from previous years. The decline in the numbers of new entrants will doubtlessly affect the dairy industry and associated sectors, as well as the strength and stability of the state's economy as a whole.

Why are fewer young people entering dairy farming? What can be done to facilitate the transfer of dairy farms from the senior generation to the next generation of farmers? The ATFFI asked Wisconsin's dairy farmers these and other questions relating to entry into and exit from farming. This report details their comments.
